Days...weeks...had it been months? Keleanth had lost track of the length of time she'd been traveling. First had come her abrupt departure from her home at Fort Emerald Bay. Then the days of searching for her family. After that...well, she didn't want to remember what had come next. It was over now, and she was finally returning to the place she wanted to call home for the rest of her life.
Weary wings waded through the air as the gyrfalcon continued to fight the headwind that had opposed her since dawn. She'd spent most of her day in the air, and while she loved flight she was almost ready to call it quits for the day. She'd been battered and buffeted by gusts of wind all day. There hadn't been a single thermal to ride so she could give her wings a break. While the white bird knew she could have landed, she also knew she was close to her final destination. If she could just push on a bit longer she might be able to rest within the walls of her beloved fort tonight.
As if reading her mind she caught sight of a tall tower along the horizon. Yellow eyes blinked, then the falcon shook her head before looking at the tower again. A smile tugged at the corners of her beak and she let a fresh wave of energy surge into her tired wings. Home. The headwind she was flying into didn't let up, but with the thought of staying in a safe, familiar place locked in her head it didn't seem quite so oppressive either.
Keleanth reached the walls just as the last rays of sunlight kissed the top stones. Instead of landing immediately the raptor circled the portcullis, her keen eyes seeking any familiar face. It troubled her that so many unfamiliar beasts now graced the walls she'd once helped monitor. She hadn't thought she'd been away from the fort long enough to find a whole new set of guards in place. A sigh escaped the falcon. She didn't know if there would still be a place for her here. Hopefully she could find some way to help. She had nowhere else she wanted to go.
A piercing whistle escaped the hooked beak as Kel let her wings carry her to the top of the tower she'd spotted. Ignoring the startled cries from the beasts inside she closed her talons around the sun-warmed stones and allowed her wings to settle against her sides. It was good to be home.
