The sun was warm on her fur as she made her way toward the looming gates. For the past half day Serena Brighteyes had been able to see the fort coming closer with each step she took. It lightened her heart to see the landmark she'd been seeking for some time. It had been a while since Serena had stopped anywhere to trade for a while. Rumors from the last town she'd been in had directed her toward the fort, promises of good trade and commerce meaning she would be able to perhaps set up a stand and make a living for herself rather than camp every night and be very near to begging on some days.
An elegant and lovely creature, Serena knew there were plenty of merchants like her, women selling their bracelets and pendants but hopefully the skills her mother had taught her would give her an advantage. A pack Serena carried jingled softly as Serena approached the sun-weathered stone walls, her skirts swishing softly. The bangles on her wrists jingled happily as she paused as the gatekeeper came forward. A cranky looking old hare, still grouchy with the early hour.
Serena gave him a smile, pretending not to notice his lingering looks on the white tattoos around her eyes. She allowed him to search her pack before moving past him through the gates into the busy fort. Beasts of all sorts hurried about toward markets and jobs, a band of otters heading past her out of the fort while a hedgehog mother herded her children along. Serena smiled to herself, pausing to watch the actions of normal life all around her. Yes, in such a normal place two things could happen. She would be dismissed for insanity or untrustworthy or her unique wares would draw attention and prove good for trade. Anything could happen.
Taking a deep breath and thanking the hare a final time, Serena made her way down the busy main street, following a harried pack of mother squirrels off in search of the markets.
