The early sounds of beasts moving around the marketplace roused Kenyon from his slumber. He twitched his whiskers, then slowly opened his eyes. Darkness still surrounded the little mouse, but it was expected. He had stashed himself inside a trunk that had been riding on the back of a trader's wagon. It had been a last resort, and an attempt to escape the guards in the town that had been pursuing him. Fortunately it had been successful. On the other paw, he now had no idea where they had stopped.
Large ears flicked back as the mouse shifted in the trunk. Once he had twisted around so he was on all fours he paused and listened. He could hear the morning greetings of various vendors and friends as they set up their stalls and pulled their wares out to display, but there was nothing indicating that the current tenant of the stall holding the trunk had arrived. He waited another minute to be sure his suspicions were correct, then very slowly started to push up on the lid of the trunk. It didn't move. He blinked, then tried again, this time pushing harder. Still nothing. A quiet squeak of distress escaped the rodent and he pushed again with the same results.
Kenyon stopped and looked up at the inside of the trunk lid. He had been sure, despite his situation, to choose a trunk that had no lock on it. There was no way he could be locked in. so why couldn't he get out? The mouse squeaked again, then braced his footpaws on the blankets that made up the trunk's contents. He steadied himself before throwing his shoulder up into the trunk lid. This time his attempts were successful, and the lid popped open. Unfortunately the items stacked on top of the lid shifted and slid to the ground, landing with a clatter. Kenyon's head popped out of the trunk and he stared at the ground with wide, pink eyes. That wasn't good.
There was no one in the stall, but the little mouse didn't waste any time. He had no desire to be caught, especially since he'd just arrived here. He hopped out of the trunk and ran out of the back of the stall, one paw clutching a small hat. Once out in the marketplace Kenyon took a good look around. He had no idea where he was, just how he'd gotten here. He slapped the hat onto his head, then took a look at his coin purse. The speedy exit from the last town had forced him to leave most of his stash behind. That meant the thief would have to start all over again. He eyed the pawful of coins in his pouch, then sighed. Well...at least this place had a market. That meant beasts with coin and plenty of traders. Surely he could find some way to take care of himself here.
With a twitch of his whiskers the scruffy albino started off across the marketplace. His eyes darted back and forth as he took in his surroundings and took mental notes. First things first...he needed to figure out where he'd ended up this time. Then he needed a hiding place. After that...well, then he could let the fun begin!
