Physical Description: | Kaie's eyes are the first thing most beasts notice. Dark orange-brown in hue with black pupils, they are bright in their intensity and sharp in their expression - so piercing that a single glance makes most beasts wonder why she is staring them down. The scar that runs diagonally across the white patch beneath her left eye doesn't help that impression. Yet those who know her well claim that she is not being antagonizing - she simply appears that way, framed by her sharp aquiline features. Her beak is small by hawk standards, but well-curved and wickedly sharp. Likewise her talons are small and dexterous, rendering her able to do more with them than a heavier but more cumbersome bird. Like all her kind, Kaie's form is light and tapered, built for speed and agility. Her wings are relatively short and pointed - not as massy as a hawk or as powerful as an eagle, but sturdy nonetheless. Steel gray plumage covers her head, back and wings like a dark blanket, ending in a gash of white behind her eyes that bleeds into a snow-white throat. White flecked with black spots spreads across her chest and belly, with black stripes running across the cream plumage of her upper legs and tail coverts. |
Weaponry: | Beak and talons are Kaie's main weapons - a deadly combination when coupled with her aerial abilities and lightning moves |
Personality: | Kaie lives for one reason only: to fight vermin. Ever since searats slaughtered her nestling siblings and killed her parents, she has been savaged by bitterness and racked with pain within. Many are the days she flies out to sea or across the plains alone, keening her loss to the sky. Yet nobeast ever sees her cry: her eyes are always dry when she returns to the roost. In the company of others she is cheerful enough: she tells a great story when she has the mind to, and her jokes are humourous if a little lame. Her speech is hawklike and has a clear northern accent, though it bears hints of the Long Patrol hares that she grew up with. But when danger threatens she is a completely different beast, and the change in demeanour can be so sudden it is frightening. One moment a chuckling companion, the next a swift, silent killer. Kaie never gives warning when she strikes. For all her seemingly jocular manner, the observant beast would note that she doesn't seem to have many (if any) close friends, and the observant beast would be correct in noting so. Kaie has a problem forming attachments, a trait brought out by her hamstrung past and compounded by her natural aloofness as a falcon. Despite her aloofness however, she is a true comrade at heart. She would never leave a companion to perish if she can help it, which she knows she sometimes can't. The quick mood changes and sharp killer instinct hide a playful character and a noble soul. She is gentle in her own way, despite her piercing stare. Kaie is really just one confused youngster, forced to grow up too early and struggling to cope with an unfriendly world. |
History: | Kaie's story is short but tumultuous. She was hatched the oldest child of Windslar and Tunipar, falcons of the western coasts ten miles north of Salamandastron. They were not of royal blood or great lineage, but they were falcons nonetheless, noble and strong in character and heart. As the eldest hatchling she soon learnt through heavy pecks from her mother how to be responsible for her younger siblings, caring for them in her parents' absence. Kaie did not like the duty, but she would not bicker with her mother, and her dislike for the task soon developed into a grudging but genuine liking for her two younger brothers. However, being the eldest chick would save her life in the end. She was already fledged and flying short spaces when searats ambushed her parents. Windslar was shot as he dived at the intruders, and Tunipar was cut down defending her nest. Yet her mother's fierce defense bought Kaie enough time to take to the air and skim low away over the waters of the lapping sea. To this day she has not forgotten the screams of her brothers, unfledged and unable to fly, and she personally believes it will haunt her to her dying day. The young pilgrim falcon flew across the coast in helpless rage and pain until she nearly crashed into a rock that loomed out of her sightless sorrow. She swerved hard to avoid it, bounced off it anyway and fell through a gap in the solid stone to find herself inside Salamandastron. She had by merest chance flown straight into the Fire Mountain itself. The Badger Lord was sympathetic, but there was little he or any hare could do to amend what had already been done. Kaie however, was allowed to stay on at the mountain, and in time became an ad hoc member of the armed forces. She carried messages that required a faster runner than a hare, and did occasional scouting where neccessary. In her leisure she practiced her flight and fight skills, her wings growing longer as she matured and her muscles developed. Her skill was proven the day she took on a gaggle of sea gulls tormenting a lone hare, and sent two spiralling to their deaths from a single plunging stoop. The juvenile, only 13 years of age, had become a proven killer. As she reached 15 years of age she grew more aloof, and the falcon's desire for space and freedom began asserting itself. She began flying further afield, traveling a wider radius every day. The time came finally when she left Salamandastron and began a slow journey northwards, with many detours and loops across the land as she took her leisure in exploring the wide expenses inland. Yet no day passed when she did not think of her lost family, and few vermin who crossed her path ever lived to tell the tale of a hunting falcon, falling like lightning from the sky. Kaie had just turned 17 when she encountered the northern mountains - and the clan of pilgrim falcons that lived there. The first to spot her was a young male patrolling the fringes of their land. He cried anger and drove at her for her unexpected intrusion, but as she spiralled away respectfully with calls of apology he softened his approach and became curious of this newcomer. Kaie was wary, but she allowed him to come within earshot of her. They exchanged quick introductions, and the male falcon (whose name was Jorndar) told her of an established fort in the area. Her attention caught now, Kaie took his directions and then turned her wings to seek out the fort described. So it was that, as spring melted into summer, the pilgrim falcon found herself at the gates of Fort Emerald Bay, and the beginning of a new life. |
